Magic Mushrooms: A Journey from Nature to Your Skin

At blu beryl, we’re often asked a crucial question: Where do we get the mushrooms that make our skincare products extraordinary?

Allow us to unravel the fascinating process behind our mycelium cultivation, a journey that combines the art of brewing with the precision of science.

1. Brewing Mycelium:

Think of it as a unique brew, not for making beer or wine, but for extracting a bunch of compounds beneficial for skincare.

We grow the mycelium, the roots of the mushroom, in a liquid environment. This liquid cultivation allows us to skip the typical mushroom fruiting body you find in shops.

Instead, we focus on the mycelium, which becomes a powerhouse of compounds during fermentation.

2. Fermentation Magic:

Our mycelium undergoes fermentation in bioreactors at the TIA Bioprocessing Platform in Durban, South Africa.

This process is where the magic happens, transforming the mycelium into a rich source of compounds, including the star ingredient—beta-glucan.

The liquid environment simplifies the extraction of these valuable compounds, setting the stage for creating our exceptional skincare range.

3. No Fruiting Bodies, No Preservatives:

Because we grow our mycelium in a liquid medium, they don’t develop the typical mushroom fruiting bodies.

This liquid-centric growth not only streamlines the extraction process but also allows us to sidestep the use of preservatives. Formulating and packaging in a lab setting at the TIA Bioprocessing Platform enables us to employ airless technology, maintaining the same shelf life without compromising your skin’s microbiome.

4. Preserving Your Microbiome:

Preservatives, often anti-microbial, can disrupt the delicate balance of your skin’s microbiome

blu beryl’s commitment to formulation without preservatives ensures that our products harmonize with your skin’s natural ecosystem, contributing to a healthier and more vibrant complexion.
